What Campers Are Afraid Of In the Outdoors
Here are the results:
Tent Campers:
- 48% were most afraid of other humans
- 8% were most afraid of ticks
- 6% were most afraid of snakes or bears
Backpackers:
- Ticks and Humans results were tied at 23% each
- 9% responded they were most afraid of bears
- 5% responded they were most afraid of being remote and injured
I asked Josh of ThruHiker whether he worried more about bears or ticks: “Technically for most trails it will always be ticks, bears I can manage by behavior…”
I personally worry more about ticks than any other wildlife. While I don’t worry about general crime at a state or national park, I do dread if a large group shows up at a campsite and plays music all night long. They are supposed to honor quiet hours but if they don’t, there’s not much you can do.

What Is The Deadliest National Park
Denali National Park is the deadliest national park when you look at deaths per visitor. The extreme environment (and not bears - there has only been 1 known person killed by a bear at the park) is the leading cause of death.
source: https://www.backpacker.com/survival/the-10-most-dangerous-national-parks-in-america/
What Is The #1 Cause Of Death In National Parks
Falls are the most common cause of death. This is not surprising because people visit the parks to see the views. But the leading cause of death in a specific park depends upon the type of park. For example, Great Smokies is a popular drive-through park so car crashes cause more deaths than a place like Lake Meade where drowning is more common.

Note - the article I reference only mentions 13 parks but I personally saw a bear at Big Bend so I added it. You are most likely going to encounter the Big Bend bears near the visitor center. I later added 4 more parks based on information I got from a helpful Instagrammer.
While I saw bear scat in the mountains we never saw a bear on trail.
But a bear walked across the road while we wrapped up lunch in the most bad-ass display of bear I could have hoped for. It simply walked across the street while traffic stopped.
While bears should be respected, you are much more likely to be killed by a cow than a bear. 22 people a year die from cattle (see the question about wolves for more information on deadly cows) while only 1 person a year dies from a bear attack (https://petkeen.com/bear-attack-statistics/).
