If you are going camping you should bring along at least a multi-tool or Swiss Army Knife.

If you are going into the backcountry, you should also at least have a full-tang fixed blade knife and folding saw. The full-tang fixed blade is going to take much more abuse than your pocket knife.

An example of things you need to do in the backcountry that you are unlikely to do in front country is processing wood by batoning. Batoning wood is when you split a log by clubbing your knife with another log.

And the folding saw is used to cut the wood into smaller pieces.

My personal pocketknife is the Swiss Army One-Hand Trekker. It’s a good size knife with a locking blade, a bottle opener, and a screwdriver. It also comes with a toothpick and tweezers.

If you are looking for a full-tang knife a Mora Garberg Carbon or KA-BAR.
